Emerald Opinion: Why Choose Bermuda?

July 14, 2021 | Admin

Bermuda is surrounded by natural beauty and is voted one of the world’s highest standards of living but, what else does this place have to offer?

Bermuda is a British overseas territory in the North Atlantic Ocean, and It is located off the coast of the United States. Most famously known as one of the 3 corners of the ‘Bermuda Triangle’, this place also boasts rich history and culture.

Although living on a small island may seem isolated, you can expect an array of things to explore. Discover the awe-inspiring Crystal Caves that are thought to be at least 30 million years old, subterranean grottos, pristine mangrove ponds, and sub-tropical forests at the 12-acre Walsingham Nature Reserve (known locally as Tom Moore’s Jungle).

You can get lost in the wide-open spaces of the Bermuda Arboretum, a 22-acre expanse of wildflower meadows and forests. It is a great spot for bird watching, with cardinals, rare bluebirds, white-eyed vireo, and other species twittering in the trees.

Bermuda

Bermuda boasts glorious, pink sand beaches, making for unbelievably beautiful photo opportunities, particularly at sunset. The colour is created by tiny invertebrates that live in Bermuda’s coral reefs. It’s a tropical paradise!

Bermuda also has its own lingo such as “Onion” which means a born-and-bred Bermudian or shouting ‘Chingas’ which is an expression of surprise or delight.

Things to consider:

  • Car rental is banned in Bermuda, to protect the infrastructure. But as the island is only 21 square miles, getting around by bike, scooter, or electric minicar is no hardship whatsoever!
  • If you are looking to socialise as a woman, The International Women’s Club of Bermuda has been established since 1981 and welcomes women from all over the world offering activities, group adventures, advice, and more.
  • Health and Travel Insurance, extremely important as it has been known that healthcare is limited in more complex cases but can also very expensive.
  • Be mindful of your money. Living costs can be extortionate so budgeting here is key.

What about the job market?

This is the perfect place to step up your career if you work in the re/insurance and wider financial industry. The market here is thriving, especially for Actuaries, Underwriters, and Risk professionals. Due to the financial and tax benefits in Bermuda, many of the well-known financial firms and re/reinsurers have offices there. Over the past years, we have also seen a constant injection of fresh capital following the endless opportunities the markets have been offering, and this has typically seen a number of new businesses come to market. With the island being small, many companies hire overseas professionals which have created a large expat community adding to the already vibrant culture on the island. To match the unavoidable living costs, the salaries and total financial packages are generously greater than the norm.

Your new employer will apply to the Department of Immigration to get you a work permit. Once this has been confirmed, it is then possible to move to Bermuda for work.
