The 22nd-24th November 2017 saw The Emerald Group head up to Birmingham for the annual IFoA Life Actuarial Conference.
As always this was a great opportunity for actuaries from across Europe to gather to swap stories, learn about new ideas and catch up with friendly faces. The ICC was once again the venue of choice, and once again they were hospitable, friendly and extremely well organised!
Wednesday began with an opening plenary from Former Labour Communications Director, Alastair Campbell. His insightful views went down surprisingly well with the actuaries in attendance, with many surprised about how much they actually with him on!! The subsequent buffet/drinks evening was equally well attended, and a great informal way for people to catch up with colleagues old and new and share feedback.
Thursday was a day full of sessions, on a wide range of topical subjects such as the potential scenarios concerning Brexit, and of course the current hot topic of IFRS17. There is much debate around the effects of both topics to the Life Actuarial community, and it’s amazing how just starting a conversation with this can lead to heated debates! The Thursday dinner was once again a wonderful spectacle, with a very tasty dinner, plenty of drinks and some humour thrown into the mix. This was of course followed by numerous hours of “networking” in subsequent bars/clubs surrounding the ICC.
Friday morning was a quiet affair, with many attendees in need of extra caffeine and water prior to conference. We were delighted to provide sustenance to as many as possible, and complement the water with a teddy to cuddle or a sweet to suck, and congratulations to David Liddle who walked away with the Amazon Echo!
Once again another fabulous conference, and our congratulations go to the organising committee for another great event. Thank you IFoA, and we look forward to seeing you all in Liverpool in 2018!!!
